What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a health care system that recognises the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions. Osteopaths are concerned with how your bones, joints, muscles, nerves, circulatory system, connective tissue and internal organs function as a holistic unit.

A core principle behind osteopathy is the idea that the body is an integrated and indivisible whole, and contains self-healing mechanisms that can be utilised as part of the treatment. No part of the body works, or can be considered, in isolation.

In Australia Osteopathy is a registered profession whose profile is growing as a safe and effective form of health care that is holistic and patient-centred. Osteopaths are university educated primary health care practitioners trained to recognise conditions which require medical referral. Osteopathy is covered by most private health funds and the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) scheme.

What Happens During A Treatment?

Using skilled evaluation, diagnosis and a wide variety of hands on techniques, the aim of osteopathy is to find the cause of the problem and restore balance and function. Techniques include soft tissue massage, stretching, manipulation and joint mobilisation, as well as more subtle and gentle techniques specific to each individual and their situation. I will also offer lifestyle and diet advice as well as prescribe herbal and nutritional support, to transform your life through long term behaviour change and guide you to be the master of their own health and wellbeing.

The number and timing of treatments depends on each individual situation but generally osteopaths want to see a patients a few times over a few weeks initially then space visits out as needed to allow the body’s own innate self-healing mechanism to take over.

How Will Osteopathy Benefit Me?

Osteopaths commonly treat musculoskeletal and/or mobility problems such as back and neck pain, arthritis, disc injuries, postural strains, sciatica, muscle and joint injuries, headache. But Osteopaths are able to treat much more than you think. Osteopathy may also assist with asthma, digestive problems, women’s health issues including pregnancy, stress and anxiety.

Osteopathy is suitable for almost anyone. It can treat and manage a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, with the aim to leave you pain free and structurally balanced. When we are aligned we feel happy and healthy and confident in our bodies.
